A visit with a purpose
A retail brief could specify a question, visit window and receipt requirement. Check travel, accessibility and any required purchase. Being nearby does not mean you qualify or have been allocated the task.
INDEPENDENT UK GUIDE / NOT A JOBS BOARD
A shop visit is only part of the assignment. Understand the brief, the report and the money you actually keep before deciding whether mystery shopping fits your life.
No jobs are available through this site. We have no employer or assignment-provider partners and cannot promise work or income.

WHAT THE WORK INVOLVES
Mystery shopping means following a scenario and reporting what happened. Providers may ask for a purchase, an enquiry or a remote interaction. Read the actual instructions before accepting; tasks and eligibility differ.

A retail brief could specify a question, visit window and receipt requirement. Check travel, accessibility and any required purchase. Being nearby does not mean you qualify or have been allocated the task.
Telephone, website and email assessments also exist. Remote does not mean effortless: check equipment, privacy, timings and the reporting deadline. Never invent a customer identity or record someone outside the provider’s authorised process.
Allow time for preparation, observations, evidence uploads and possible clarification. Describe what you saw or heard, rather than guessing motives. If an instruction is unclear or impossible, ask the provider before proceeding.
YOUR FIGURES, NOT A PAY ESTIMATE
A fee pays for the task. A reimbursement returns eligible spending; it is not extra earnings. No current paid rates are published here because the reviewed provider pages do not expose assignment fees.
Enter figures from a real brief or your own hypothetical scenario. Include reporting time in your decision, even though this worksheet does not calculate an hourly rate.
ESTIMATED TASK RETURN / BEFORE TAX
Fee − unreimbursed travel − other unreimbursed spending.
Blank means unknown, not zero. Do not add reimbursed purchases to the fee or subtract costs already reimbursed. This is a planning subtraction, not taxable profit or guaranteed payment.
Check the reimbursement cap, excluded purchases, evidence rules and payment trigger separately. You may need to fund the purchase first and wait for approval; do not commit money you cannot afford to have tied up.
MAKE YOUR OWN FIELD NOTES
Build a preferences and availability brief to keep on your device. This does not check eligibility, find work or contact a provider. Use broad choices only; leave names, addresses, health information and financial details out.
Generated locally. Form contact details are never included. Choices disappear on reload; a download stays wherever you save it.
A PAUSE, NOT A SAFETY SCORE
Tick any warning signs you have noticed. This checklist cannot certify a business or offer as safe, even when nothing is selected. A familiar logo, company registration or polished website is not proof that the sender is genuine.
If you have paid a suspected scammer, contact your bank promptly. Keep messages and payment records, stop contact, and use the official fraud-reporting route for your UK nation.
Police guidance on recruitment scams ↗No flags selected. This does not establish safety. Verify independently.
GO TO THE SOURCE
Mystery Shoppers Ltd describes free signup, assignment applications and reporting. iShopFor Ipsos says payment and reimbursement are visible before acceptance. These are independent reading links, not partners, endorsements or evidence of vacancies near you.
Do not assume the word “job” means employment. Check the contract, working status and your right to undertake that work. Student visa holders must check restrictions on self-employment; permission for some employed work is not permission for every assignment.
Use GOV.UK’s working-for-yourself guidance for questions to raise with HMRC or an adviser. Our subtraction tool does not decide tax treatment, benefits effects or immigration eligibility.

BEFORE AN ACTUAL ASSIGNMENT
Useful preparation is specific. Ask the organisation that actually allocates the task, keep its written answers and decide whether the unresolved details are acceptable. This site cannot answer on its behalf.
Ask whether payment depends on a completed visit, an accepted report or a further review. Check how errors can be corrected and what happens if the location is closed. A payment date means little without understanding the event that starts the clock. Keep the fee and reimbursement conditions with the version of the brief you accepted.
Confirm whether a receipt, photograph or other evidence is needed. Ask before redacting a document or making a recording. Do not collect extra customer details just in case. Store necessary evidence securely, submit it through the verified provider channel and avoid sharing assignment material publicly. A customer observation should not become an excuse for unnecessary personal-data collection.
Check the whole commitment against your diary, including preparation, travel, reporting and time to answer questions. Decide your own affordable purchase limit before seeing an attractive assignment. If a deadline clashes with other responsibilities, ask about flexibility before accepting, not afterwards. It is reasonable to decline a task whose practical requirements or payment conditions you cannot establish.
